Developing innovative approaches to tuberculosis (TB) care
Our work in Tajikistan
In Tajikistan, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières focuses on improving tuberculosis (TB) care, implementing a holistic, person-centred approach, including in-home treatment for patients, where possible.
How we're helping in Tajikistan
In Kulob, southern Tajikistan, we run the Zero TB project aiming to eliminate TB through prevention and care in households, workplaces, and health facilities. The project comprises active case finding, patient follow-up, laboratory diagnosis, and individualized treatment, including for drug-resistant TB. Our teams visit neighborhoods and villages, using portable X-ray machines to screen people close to their homes. We refer those with TB symptoms for testing and treatment, in line with World Health Organization guidelines.
We also provide mental health and psychosocial support, including counseling and assistance with treatment adherence, to patients during their recovery process.
We continue to support the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Population in strengthening national TB strategies by enhancing diagnostic capacity, training health care workers, and introducing digital chest X-ray systems with computer-aided detection.
