Dallas area nurse Lisabeth List and field logistician Voitek Asztabski have worked in some of the world’s major medical emergencies of the past few years, including Darfur, Sudan, East Timor, Ivory Coast, and Sierra Leone. They recently returned from Pakistan, where they coordinated medical care for thousands of sick and injured people following the devastating earthquake that hit the Kashmir region of Pakistan and India in October 2005.
How did their experiences in Pakistan compare to their work in conflict zones? How do the medical needs in natural disasters differ from those in conflict situations?
