Screening of the MSF film The Invisibles with Q&A
Produced by Academy Award winner Javier Bardem

Washington, DC

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and the Embassy of Spain are pleased to present "Invisibles", a film produced by renowned Spanish actor, and Academy Award winner, Javier Bardem, at the American University Museum in Washington, DC.

Inspired by the international humanitarian work of MSF, Javier Bardem worked with the organization to produce a film which highlights five neglected humanitarian crises taken from MSF's yearly "Top Ten" list of underreported humanitarian stories. Each topic is addressed in a separate short film, shot by different directors, creating the five-part film "Invisibles."

Mariano Barroso directs "Bianca's Dream," which looks at the dual role of eflornithine, a drug used as a beauty product in wealthy nations, but which is needed to treat Sleeping Sickness in the Central African Republic.

In "Letters to Nora," director Isabel Coixet examines how the parasitic disease Chagas afflicting her family in Bolivia affects a young woman working in Madrid.

Director Javier Corcuera travels to Colombia in "Voices of the Stones," where he documents a group of people by the ongoing violence in that country as they try to return to their rural homes.

"Good Night, Ouma," directed by Fernando Leon de Aranoa, examines the ongoing crises of the "night commuters" and child soldiers in northern Uganda.

Acclaimed director Wim Wenders looks into the wide-spread problem of sexual violence and how it is affecting victims in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This dynamic film gives audiences the chance to encounter situations MSF's medical teams face every day, and helps shed some light on these forgotten humanitarian crises.

Please join us for a question and answer session following the film, featuring Paula Farias, Executive Director of MSF in Spain. Ms. Farias was instrumental in arranging the visits to MSF' humanitarian programs by all five directors, as well as Javier Bardem. Ms. Farias will be available to answer question on the MSF programs featured in the film, as well as how her office coordinated with the film's producer to make this moving documentary.

The Neglected Crisis of Malnutrition

New York, NY

This is a recording of the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and Columbia University’s Institute for Human Nutrition (IHN) panel discussion about addressing the global crisis of malnutrition, which took place September 10, 2008 at the Riverside Church in New York City. The program was moderated by Dr. Ron Waldman, Professor of Public Health at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and Team Leader for Pandemic Preparedness and Response at the United States Agency for International Development. The panelists included Biraj Patnaik, Principle Advisor, Office of the Commissioners to India’s Supreme Court; Dr. Milton Tectonidis, MSF nutrition advisor; and Dan Maxwell, Tufts University. The discussion is preceded by a brief introduction by Richard Deckelbaum, Director, Institute of Human Nutrition, and Susan Shepherd, Medical Advisor, MSF Campaign for Access to Essential Medicines.

Malnutrition is a chronic emergency that has been all but invisible: it accounts for 11 percent of the global disease burden and contributes to 3.5 to 5 million deaths in children under five each year. Although the foundations of good early nutrition are well known and simple, affordable, and effective interventions exist -- the needs of millions of children are still ignored.

What is the relationship between food insecurity and childhood malnutrition? Why are even the best programs addressing food insecurity insufficient in responding to childhood malnutrition? In malnutrition hotspots, is food aid an emergency response or a long-term investment in the health and futures of children? At a time of rising food prices, what will be the impact on the most vulnerable children? And finally, what role can the international community play in realizing the right to good nutrition for women and children? How can we mobilize political support to address this devastating crisis?

Food Crisis: How Rising Prices Are Stoking Emergencies from Haiti to Somalia
New York, NY

Event postcard

Please join Christiane Amanpour, Chief International Correspondent at CNN, as she leads a discussion with humanitarian experts about the impact of the rising cost of food on people living on the margins and amid armed conflicts around the world. Dr. Bruce Cogill, IASC Global Nutrition Cluster Coordinator; Alex de Waal, a program director of the Social Science Research Council, a fellow of the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, and a director of Justice Africa in London; Nicolas de Torrenté, Executive Director of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF); and Dr. Susan Shepherd, nutritional expert and medical advisor to MSF’s Campaign for Access to Essential Medicines, will debate the repercussions of the food crisis.

Riots in Bangladesh, Haiti, Ivory Coast, and other countries have been the most violent and visible manifestations of food’s rising cost. Yet it is millions of people living in the shadows—families already struggling to feed their young children in global malnutrition hotspots—and those caught up in wars—displaced persons in Somalia or Sudan—who face the gravest danger.

How is the rising price of food exacerbating the predicament of those already living on the brink? Who is most affected and why? How are humanitarian aid organizations and governments responding? And what effective nutritional strategies can be deployed to meet the needs of the invisible victims of this crisis?

Please note that seating is limited and will done on a first-come, first-served basis.

The program is free, open to the public, and wheelchair accessible.

Boston, MA

Event postcard

Please join Richard Knox, Health and Science Correspondent for National Public Radio, in conversation with four aid workers from Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

Executive Director of MSF-USA, Nicolas de Torrenté, water-and-sanitation expert and staff recruiter Kathryn Dedieu, nurse Sally Najera, and physician Hansel Otero, have teamed up with other local and international staff to deliver emergency relief to people in need of medical care around the world. Between them, they have worked in 23 MSF projects, delivering emergency medical care in places as diverse as Afghanistan, China, Macedonia, Rwanda, Somalia, and Sudan.

They will discuss the challenges of reaching people caught in conflict, treating malnutrition, and responding to epidemics, and share how they have made working with MSF a part of their lives.

Doctors Without Borders film at the Jacksonville Film Festival
Invisibles

Jacksonville, FL

Invisibles

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is pleased to present Invisibles, a film produced by Academy Award winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem, at the 2008 Jacksonville Film Festival.

From Ethiopia To Chechnya: Reflections on Humanitarian Action
MSF Panel Discussion at New York University

New York, NY

Please join Thomas Keenan, Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and Director of the Human Rights Project at Bard College, as he moderates a discussion between David Rieff, author of A Bed for the Night: Humanitarianism in Crisis, and Dr. Rony Brauman, former president of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), to honor one of the great figures of humanitarian action, François Jean.

This expert panel will look at several key crises at the end of the 20th century, examining how they have affected humanitarian activities and principles today. What did Ethiopia and North Korea teach us about addressing famine? How did interventions in Somalia, Sudan, Chechnya, and the Balkans change the way we think about security and delivering aid? How have humanitarian principles changed since their origins in the 19th century? Are they still suited to the 21st?

This event is free, wheelchair accessible, and open to the public.

This event is co-sponsored by Bard College and The NYU Institute for Public Knowledge.

Doctors Without Borders Panel Discussion in Washington, DC
We Can Treat Malnutrition: Why Are Millions of Children Still Waiting?

Washington, DC

Join National Public Radio’s Brenda Wilson; Flora Sibanda-Mulder, Senior Advisor, Nutrition Security/Emergency, UNICEF; and Dr. Susan Shepherd and Dr. Buddhima Lokuge from Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to discuss how effective new treatments for malnutrition can reach those most in need.

Five million children under the age of five die every year from causes related to malnutrition. Yet today, effective treatments exist for those most at risk: an outpatient-based approach using nutrient dense, ready-to-use foods that have the potential to reach the majority of children living in the most impoverished parts of the world. So why do only 3 percent of the millions of children who need this lifesaving treatment have access to it?

What are the causes and consequences of malnutrition? What is the potential of this new approach to treat the most severely malnourished? And what must international food aid and nutritional programs do to ensure that the promise of these new approaches can reach the millions of children who need care today?

This event is free, wheelchair accessible, and open to the public.
