Writing on the Edge Great Contemporary Writers on the Front Line of Crisis
New York, NY
JUST ANNOUNCED: THIS SPECIAL MSF EVENT WILL NOW BE HOSTED BY ABC NEWS CORRESPONDENT BOB WOODRUFF
Award-winning photographer Tom Craig, teamed up with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and an international roster of highly-acclaimed, widely-traveled writers, directors, and actors, and visited various MSF projects around the world. They returned with poignant accounts of their experiences, which became the basis for the unique book, Writing on the Edge.
Mr. Craig will take the stage with ABC News Correspondent Bob Woodruff to discuss his involvement and experience documenting the humanitarian activities of MSF. He will be joined by contributors to the book, including Damon Galgut, who traveled to Uganda with Craig, and journalist Hari Kunzru, who traveled with Craig to Assam, India. Both will share their stories visiting MSF humanitarian programs and the patients they encountered. Dr. Greg Elder, Deputy Operations Manager for MSF-USA, who is responsible for program activities in Uganda, Somalia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Haiti, will also take part in the event. Dr. Elder will share his experiences in the field and current information on MSF projects around the world, many of which are featured in the book.
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and VII Photo present “Starved for Attention,” a multimedia campaign exposing the neglected crisis of global childhood malnutrition – a preventable and treatable condition that affects 195 million children worldwide. The event will feature screenings of short documentaries and a panel discussion, moderated by WBUR reporter Martha Bebinger, on how advances in nutritional science are redefining the response to this crisis.
Panelists include:
Patrick Webb, Dean of Academic Affairs, Professor, Friedman School of Nutrition Science & Policy, Tufts University
Dr. Marc Levin, MSF aid worker, Maternity Coordinator, Beth Israel Residency in Urban Family Practice in New York City
Dr. Caroline Kistin, Division of General Pediatrics, Boston University School of Medicine/Boston Medical Center
Jessica Dimmock, photojournalist & "Starved for Attention" contributor, VII Network
VII photojournalists Marcus Bleasdale, Jessica Dimmock, Ron Haviv, Antonin Kratochvil, Franco Pagetti, Stephanie Sinclair, and John Stanmeyer traveled to seven malnutrition “hotspots” around the world—from war zones to emerging economies—to produce a series of multimedia documentaries to shed light on the underlying causes of the malnutrition crisis and innovative approaches to combat this disease.

Malnutrition threatens the survival and development of millions of children around the world. Global commitments to provide more nutritional food assistance to combat child malnutrition often struggle to meet local needs while at the same time maintaining the organizational guidelines of donors. As a result, global food aid commitments often lead to ineffective policies and incomplete programs.
On October 12, the Wolfensohn Center for Development at Brookings and Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) will host a discussion of the challenges in global food assistance and how recent developments and initiatives can be expanded to effectively tackle the ongoing crisis of global child malnutrition.
Panelists include Bruce Cogill, chief of nutrition at USAID; Meera Shekar, lead health and nutrition specialist at the World Bank; Susan Shepherd, head of nutrition programs, MSF; and Victoria Quinn, senior vice president for progams, Helen Keller International.
Elaine Wolfensohn, founder of the Wolfensohn Family Foundation, will make introductory remarks. Brookings Nonresident Senior Fellow Raj Desai will moderate the discussion.
After the program, panelists will take audience questions.

Chagas Disease in the Americas Bringing a Neglected Disease into the Spotlight
Washington, DC
Drugs For Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), Doctors without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and the nation's only Chagas disease clinic invite you to a
Film screening of "Chagas: A Hidden Affliction" Feature documentary by Argentine filmmaker Ricardo Preve
Filmed in the interior of Argentina, this documentary gives a voice to those suffering from Chagas and to those working to find a cure to this disease that affects millions in Latin America and the US, but is practically unknown to the general public. Chagas has few external symptoms: the disease slowly eats away at the internal organs of patients, and may not kill them for 10 to 20 years. Despite predictions that the disease would become less prevalent as living conditions for the poor in Latin America improve, the disease lives on.
Panel discussion following the 25-minute film will include:
Maira Guitierrez, Los Angeles-area resident living with Chagas disease Dr. Sheba Meymandi, Director of the nation's only Chagas treatment clinic, the Center of
Excellence for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Chagas Disease, at Olive View-UCLA Medical
Center Gemma Ortiz, Head of the Global Chagas Campaign, MSF-Spain
Dr. Isabela Ribeiro, Senior Project Manager, DNDi Latin America
Jana Armstrong, Executive Director, DNDi North America
This event is free and open to the public.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Miami Dade College, and First Second Books are pleased to present a unique exhibit featuring photos and illustrations from the graphic novel THE PHOTOGRAPHER.
In 1986, photojournalist Didier Lefèvre documented a clandestine cross-border humanitarian mission undertaken by a Doctors Without Borders team to assist Afghans stranded without medical care in areas hardest-hit by the Soviet invasion. This one mission was part of a massive humanitarian aid effort launched by Doctors Without Borders in the months following the 1979 Soviet occupation. Dodging Soviet aircraft and navigating treacherous terrain, Lefèvre’s journey nearly cost him his own life. Over a decade later, he collaborated with acclaimed illustrator Emmanuel Guibert to bring this story to life in THE PHOTOGRAPHER, a work translated into eleven languages.
This exhibit offers a glimpse into the book through Lefèvre’s dramatic images and Guibert’s stunning artwork, and bears witness to the atrocities and suffering the Afghan people endured—and still endure today.
Please join us for an opening reception Wednesday, November 4 at 6-8:00 PM at the Centre Gallery on Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus.
