Objective: To support Doctors Without Borders communications department and provide a practical learning experience to an individual interested in communications and social media for an international nonprofit organization.

Overview: The Communications Department of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) works to expand awareness of humanitarian crises and endemic health problems that medical teams address around the world. We primarily use social media to raise public awareness about the medical humanitarian issues we address. We also use these tools to garner press attention, reach advocacy targets, and raise funds, and to support recruitment goals and promote our events.  

The social media intern will be involved in strategizing and planning, researching, posting, tracking, and reporting. This is a hands-on position, offering the opportunity to actively improve tools through which MSF communicates its messages. An undergraduate or graduate student with a high level of experience with social media and an interest in journalism, non-profit communications, and/or international affairs would be best suited for this position.

Duties include some or all of the following based on current needs:

  • Daily monitoring of MSF mentions on social media through dedicated tools
  • Planning and scheduling posts requested from managers
  • Finding appropriate visual images to accompany posts
  • Using tracking code with all posts
  • Posting on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube, and other platforms as needed
  • Reporting performance metrics
  • Tracking comments on posts
  • Other duties as requested  

Required Skills:

  • Strong interest in and track record on social media
  • Knowledge of social media monitoring and tools
  • Understanding of concepts of organizational style and voice
  • Interest in humanitarian communications
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Excellent organizational skills

Preferred Skills:

  • Above-average computer literacy
  • Skills in Photoshop, Google Analytics, Radian6, TweetDeck, Excel
  • French or Spanish language skills
