Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) says a new combination of drugs created to treat extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) is having a significant impact on a group of patients in the midst of a two-year treatment to cure their disease.

In 2013, an MSF team in Grozny noticed that a growing number of patients with multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) were not responding to second-line drugs, and there was no alternative medication available in the country to help them.

During the last week, the number of migrants and refugees stranded in the shrubby forests around the village of Idomeni on the border between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) increased tenfold. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is providing medical consultations, psychological support, and relief items, and is now also planning to reinforce its activities in the area by launching an additional mobile team.

On Monday, June 15, at least one person died during a search and rescue operation by the Bourbon Argos, a ship chartered by the international medical organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to carry out search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean sea. People who were rescued reported that another two people had drowned but their deaths could not be confirmed.

On Sunday, May 31, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams provided emergency psychological support to 18 out of 454 migrants at the port of Augusta who had been rescued at sea after trying to cross the Mediterranean from Libya over the weekend. Seventeen of the passengers brought to Augusta had already died before being rescued due to asphyxiation from inhaling gasoline vapor during an engine breakdown. The 18 who received counseling from MSF’s psychological first-aid team were deeply traumatized by the deaths of their friends and family members during the journey.

Medical needs remain urgent for both residents and people displaced by conflict on both sides of the front line in Ukraine. Many Ukrainian health workers have left rebel-held areas, leaving thousands of people in remote villages without access to adequate health care. Many medical facilities have been damaged or destroyed, and there are critical shortages of both basic and specialized medicines and supplies.

Though fighting in eastern Ukraine has declined since a ceasefire came into effect on February 15, shelling continues in some areas and medical needs remain urgent on both sides of the frontline. Residents and displaced people alike are living in extremely precarious conditions, many medical facilities have been damaged or destroyed, and there are critical shortages of basic and specialized medicines and medical supplies.

With doctors working in hospitals close to the frontline struggling to treat the wounded with dwindling supplies, Doctors WIthout Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams are stepping up their support, but continued heavy fighting is preventing them from reaching the hardest-hit areas.
