Since the European Union (EU) agreement with Turkey came into force on March 20, so-called "hotspots" set up on the main islands in Greece in October 2015 to screen and register asylum seekers were transformed overnight into detention centers run by the Greek army and police, where many are now trapped.

Medical teams for the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) treated hundreds of people today, April 10, following violence at the border between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). At least 10 people have reported to MSF teams that they were beaten by FYROM police; around 40 people were injured by rubber bullets.

Thousands of men, women, and children are stranded between Greece and the Balkans after the sudden imposition of new border restrictions for Afghan refugees on the Western Balkans route this week. Refugees are being provided with no information and little-to-no humanitarian assistance, and are at risk of violence and abuse.

After eight months at sea, 20,129 people rescued, and more than 120 separate search-and-rescue operations, the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) search and rescue ship Bourbon Argos returned to port for the last time in 2015 on December 30. As winter conditions have reduced the number of people crossing the central Mediterranean, MSF has gauged that there are currently enough assets to deal with existing needs during the winter season.

A boat carrying about 85 people capsized off the northern coast of Lesvos, Greece, yesterday, causing at least two deaths, said the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), which rescued survivors through a joint effort with Greenpeace.

Thousands of people are entering Slovenia each day from different points along the Croatian border. While some are staying in overcrowded transit centers, others are forced to spend nights outdoors, sleeping in fields. In response, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams are working alongside the Slovenian Ministry of Health in the transit center of Brezice, in addition to increasing their provision of humanitarian aid elsewhere in the area.

Thousands of refugees and migrants in Serbia, stranded by delays at border crossings and registration points across the Balkans, have been exposed to conditions that pose a threat to their health as assistance fails to meet minimum standards. Unless adequate protections are urgently put in place, Doctors Without Bordesr/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) warns that thousands of pregnant women, young children, and elderly people will be exposed to extremely harsh conditions this winter with potentially life-threatening implications.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) medical coordinator Jota Echevarría recently returned from projects in Hungary, Serbia, and Croatia, where in recent weeks MSF teams have been providing medical services to thousands of refugees, mainly from Syria, who are fleeing war and trying to reach the heart of Europe, where they hope to find safe asylum. Their long, dangerous journey has taken them through Turkey into Greece, and from there on foot or by bus across Macedonia and Serbia.

A team of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) logisticians has helped build a transit camp with capacity to accommodate more than 1,000 people in the Idomeni area of Greece, close to the border with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). MSF has set up four large 240–square meter tents and two 45–square meter tents to be used for medical activities. The camp is also equipped with basic water and sanitation facilities.
