In response to a statement by the Kenyan government that it intends to close its camps sheltering hundreds of thousands of Somali refugees, the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) issued the following statement from Liesbeth Aelbrecht, MSF head of mission in Kenya:

As the rainy season approaches in Wajir, northeastern Kenya, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) warns that the substandard water and sanitation situation is creating ideal conditions for a future increase in cholera cases. While today patient numbers in the cholera treatment center in Wajir Hospital are stable, MSF urges for an immediate improvement in sanitation services to avoid another spike in cases.

NAIROBI/NEW YORK—The international medical humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF), health authorities, and other partners continue their response to a major cholera outbreak in Kenya that has spread to 10 of the country’s 47 counties. The outbreak, which began in January, has killed 72 people, according to official figures.

NAIROBI/NEW YORK—Increasing violence in northeastern Kenya has forced the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to evacuate several of its employees from the Dadaab refugee camp and to suspend some medical activities there, depriving Somali refugees living there of much-needed care, MSF announced today.

In response to the April 2 attack on Garissa University a Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) medical team is providing support to the Kenyan Ministry of Health at Garissa Hospital. Currently, MSF is treating survivors of the attack suffering from gunshot and blast wounds, as well as people who sustained cut injuries from shattered glass during their escape.
