Officially, an unaccompanied minor is a foreign child under 18 who not in the care of a responsible adult; a father, mother, or close relative. Nearly 34,000 unaccompanied minors arrived in Europe in 2016, most from Eritrea, Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Gambia. In France, child welfare services have a legal obligation to protect these children. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is helping to fill some of the large gaps in the system.

After a week of extreme cold in the Balkans, thousands of refugees remain trapped in Serbia. The number of refugees in the country is unclear, but authorities give an unofficial estimate of 8,500. There are only 6,000 official spaces available in the reception centers, and only about half of those are adapted for winter conditions.

Since the conflict began in eastern Ukraine, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has supported more than 350 health facilities on the both sides of the contact line with donations of medical equipment and medicines to treat war-wounded and people with chronic diseases. MSF teams have also provided mental health counseling, primary health care, and have assisted safe deliveries for pregnant women.

Collins, 25, from Cameroon was rescued by the Dignity I, one of the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) rescue ships in the Mediterranean on Sunday. Collins was nine months pregnant, and she had begun having contractions on the rubber boat where she was packed in among 120 other people desperately trying to reach Europe.
