Nyekuony, 35, was fishing in the river near her home in South Sudan’s Sudd swamps, one of the world’s largest wetland areas, when she was bitten on the foot by a snake. She sought help from a traditional healer, then bought medicines from the local pharmacy, but the wound refused to heal. Before long, the flesh and bone had started to rot, eating away at her foot and lower leg. No longer able to walk, Nyekuony had to move around on all fours. By this time, the region was caught up in conflict, and it was too dangerous to travel to a hospital.

PARIS/NEW YORK—One year after the 51-day war in Gaza, neighborhoods destroyed during the fighting have not been rebuilt and hundreds of Palestinians with devastating injuries stemming from the Israeli assault still fill the waiting rooms of the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), many of them needing complex reconstructive surgeries and physical rehabilitation. With the continued blockade and siege of Gaza, it is as if the war had just ended, MSF said.

Yangon/New York, March 1, 2014 -- On February 27, Médecins Sans Frontières Holland (MSF) received a written order from the Union Government of Myanmar to cease all operations in the country, which led to a full closure of all MSF Holland clinics on February 28. This act left patients confused and desperately concerned across the whole country.
