JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN/NEW YORK, JULY 29, 2016 — The international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is responding to a cholera outbreak in Juba by vaccinating people at high risk, providing clean drinking water and supporting medical treatment, as more than 300 cases have been recorded in the city, including five deaths.

Hospitals are buckling under the pressure from attacks and dwindling supplies in eastern Aleppo, Syria, the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières warned today, as the number of wounded patients increases and an estimated 250,000 people are now under siege in the city with no way out.

On March 9, 2016, European leaders announced that the so-called "Balkan route" was closed after Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and Slovenia completely shut their borders to people trying to pass through to seek asylum in northern Europe. For thousands of people fleeing violence and persecution in their home countries, this route represented one of very few ways to reach safety and protection in Europe.

"Libya is a very dangerous place. There are a lot of armed people. People are killed and kidnappings are common. Arriving in Tripoli, we were locked in a house with 600 to 700 other people. We had no water to wash ourselves, we had very little food, and we were forced to sleep on top of each other. It was very difficult for my daughter—she fell sick many times. There was a lot of violence. I was beaten with bare hands, with sticks, and with guns. If you move, they beat you. If you talk, they beat you. We spent months like that, being beaten every day."

Today the MV Aquarius, a search and rescue vessel run in partnership between Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and SOS MEDITERRANEE, rescued 209 people from two rubber dinghies in distress on the central Mediterranean. The team also recovered the bodies of 21 women and one man who had died at sea.

In the week following a recent round of fighting in Juba, South Sudan’s capital, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams treated more than 2,700 patients in four clinics across the city. The organization has also been supplying clean drinking water in Juba and performing surgeries for people more seriously wounded during the violence.

For over a year, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has provided assistance to displaced people living in remote areas in the north of Niger's Diffa region for over a year, far from humanitarian aid. According to official sources, more than 280,000 people displaced by violence linked to the Islamic State’s West Africa Province, better known as Boko Haram, are now in Diffa, in southeastern Niger.

JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN, JULY 13, 2016 — Teams from Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) are responding to medical needs in Juba following recent intense fighting in the city.

Yesterday, a four-person team ran mobile clinics at St. Theresa Church, where 2,500 people were taking refuge. The team focused on those most in need of medical care and treated 115 people, including 82 children.
