A cholera outbreak has struck overcrowded camps where thousands of Burundian refugees are gathering in Tanzania. According to the World Health Organization, 31 people have died of the disease and more than 3,000 acute diarrhea cases have been reported among the refugees. In collaboration with local authorities, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is opening rehydration points and cholera treatment centers in Kagunga and Kigoma camps.

A meningitis epidemic has beeng spreading across Niger since January, affecting 5,273 people and killing 352. MSF is working in collaboration with Niger’s Ministry of Health to provide almost 430 beds and free medical care for patients.

MONROVIA, LIBERIA/BRUSSELS—The international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) welcomes the World Health Organization's declaration that Liberia is Ebola-free after 42 days with no recorded cases, while warning that the outbreak is not over, as new cases continue in neighboring Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Cross-border surveillance must be improved to prevent Ebola from re-emerging in Liberia, MSF said.
