Concha Fernández is the project coordinator for two of the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams currently responding to medical needs in Ecuador following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the northeast of the country on April 16. According to official figures, 570 people are confirmed dead, more than 7,000 are injured, and 155 people remain missing. More than 24,400 people are now living in shelters. Early Wednesday morning, a powerful aftershock measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck about 25 kilometers west of Muisne, one of the hardest-hit areas.

The earthquakes that ratted southwestern Japan last week injured around 1,100 people in Kumamoto and Oita prefectures and led to the deaths of another 58. Roughly 103,000 people remained displaced in Kumamoto and around 600 in Oita, and the authorities are still searching for people who are unaccounted for as well. What's more, due to heavy rains and the subsequent risk of landslides, some 240,000 people have been advised to evacuate 19 cities, towns and villages in Kumamoto and Oita.

Two cyclones hit the southeast coast of Yemen in early November and did major damage, destroying houses, bridges and other infrastructure in the city of Mukalla, Hadhramaut province, and leaving hundreds of families homeless in the region.

To provide access to health care, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) set up a mobile clinic in Mukalla city, where a doctor and nurse have provided more than 300 medical consultations.

BRUSSELS—A Damascus area hospital supported by the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was struck by missiles on November 19, during an attack on a town in a besieged area east of the Syrian capital.

October 27, 2015

An earthquake recorded between 7.6 and 8.1 on the Richter scale rocked parts of northeastern Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan on the afternoon of October 26. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) medical projects in northwestern Pakistan were faced with an initial influx of seriously wounded in the first hours.

Two weeks after severe flooding affected an estimated one million people across Myanmar, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is expanding its support to the government’s response in both Rakhine State and the Sagaing Region.

This will both help meet the immediate needs of those directly affected by flooding and also mitigate the elevated risk facing communities from water- and mosquito-borne infectious diseases, including malaria, diarrhea, and dengue fever.
