Two weeks after severe flooding affected an estimated one million people across Myanmar, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is expanding its support to the government’s response in both Rakhine State and the Sagaing Region.

This will both help meet the immediate needs of those directly affected by flooding and also mitigate the elevated risk facing communities from water- and mosquito-borne infectious diseases, including malaria, diarrhea, and dengue fever.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) began its response to the largest Ebola outbreak in history in March 2014 and, despite progress made in the fight against the virus, Ebola stubbornly lives on in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, where more than 27,678 people have been infected and 11,276 have died.

For the past eight weeks, the number of cases in the region has held at around 30 new infections per week, a number that would be considered a disaster in normal circumstances.

MONROVIA, LIBERIA/BRUSSELS—The international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) welcomes the World Health Organization's declaration that Liberia is Ebola-free after 42 days with no recorded cases, while warning that the outbreak is not over, as new cases continue in neighboring Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Cross-border surveillance must be improved to prevent Ebola from re-emerging in Liberia, MSF said.
