NEW YORK—A United States government program meant to reward pharmaceutical companies for investing in research and development (R&D) for neglected diseases, and which will soon include Ebola on its list of eligible diseases, is enriching drug companies without ensuring that patients, treatment providers, or governments have access to these lifesaving drugs at an affordable price, said the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Monday.

BRUSSELS — The international response to the Ebola crisis in West Africa has been slow and uneven leaving local people, national governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to do most of the practical, hands-on work, the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said today, warning that the international community risks failing to adapt to the outbreak after initially failing to respond quickly enough.

Starting in February 2014, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been providing medical assistance to more than 30,000 South Sudanese refugees who fled their homes and sought sanctuary in Sudan’s White Nile state. Most came from Upper Nile state, which borders Sudan to the southeast, part of the large population of South Sudanese who’ve been displaced from their homes, fearing for their lives, since conflict erupted in their homeland in December 2013.

With winter having arrived in eastern Ukraine, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is continuing to support hospitals on both sides of the frontline, and expanding its psychological assistance for people in the hardest-hit areas. The needs remain high, because despite the signing of a ceasefire agreement in September, fighting has continued in several cities and towns, with particularly heavy clashes taking place over the past two weeks.
