Humanitarian Flight Crashes in DRC; One MSF Staff Onboard

September 2, 2008

A humanitarian air service flight went missing during a storm on September 1 en route between Kisangani and Bukavu. Contact was lost with the aircraft prior to landing. The plane was located on the morning of Tuesday, September 2, crashed near Bukavu. As of midday on Tuesday, aerial surveillance indicated that there were no survivors of the crash, but no bodies had yet been recovered or identified.

Samuel Bamoueni, a member of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) international medical team, was on board the plane.  A surgeon from Congo-Brazzaville, Samuel was working with MSF in North Kivu. MSF is shocked by this tragic news and is awaiting further information. In the meantime, our heartfelt thoughts are with his family.
