Guinea: MSF Assists Victims of Conakry ViolenceSeptember 29, 2009 Hospitals in Conakry have been overwhelmed by an influx of hundreds of wounded following the violent repression of a large-scale protest in the Guinean capital. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has teams present in the city and is providing hospitals and health centers with medical material and assisting with evacuating, treating, and feeding of the wounded. At least 300 people, including women and children, have sought medical help at Donka hospital shortly after security forces opened fire on thousands of demonstrators gathered in a stadium. Two MSF ambulances have been picking up wounded and taking them to Donka hospital, which is the largest public hospital in the country. MSF staff assisting Donka hospital’s personnel report that most of the wounded had received gunshot wounds or had been attacked with knives. Four women seen by MSF also reported having been raped. An MSF team working at the Matam health center treated 15 injured people yesterday, including three with bullet wounds. MSF is in the process of reinforcing its teams in Guinea and is preparing to respond in case violence continues to escalate.
