DRC: Violence Continues Against Civilians

November 2, 2009

Louis finds one of his two sons, kidnapped four months previously. Attacks, rapes and kidnappings occur frequently here. We are in the northern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the Upper and Lower Uélé. The region has been in the grip of violence since 2008, with clashes continuing between members of the Lord's Resistance Army, a Ugandan rebel group, and Congolese and Ugandan armed forces.  Aid remains inadequate in this hard-to-reach area. In some places, MSF is the only NGO in the field. Other humanitarian organizations must mobilize to work with this isolated population, trapped in a conflict that is spreading here, in the northern Democratic Republic of Congo.
