South Sudan became an independent country July 9, but the new nation’s health system has many years to go before it can adequately serve the population of eight million. Throughout the country, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides access to health care, including mother-and-child healthcare; South Sudan has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world.
