Massacre in Northern Ugandan CampFebruary 23, 2004Lira, Uganda, February 23, 2004 - Nearly 200 people were reportedly killed in a massacre this past Saturday in a camp for displaced people 15 miles outside of Lira, northern Uganda, that was home to nearly 4,800 Ugandans. Teams from Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) assisted staff at Lira Hospital in treating 51 survivors who had reached the hospital with bullet and machete wounds and burns. "These are the few that made it to the hospital," said MSF's Joke Zeydner, MD, in Lira. "We don't know how many people are still hiding in the surrounding forests, wounded and unable to get here. People told us that they were forced into huts and then the huts were set on fire. A lot of people had burns on their head, shoulders and back, because the burning roof fell on them." On Monday, the MSF team was able to reach Aloi, another of the camps outside Lira municipality that has also suffered from attacks. "We found a lot of malnourished children," Zeydner said. "Most were sick, and a lot of people suffered from malaria. There was no medical facility at all. Every hut was just packed with people. MSF opened a clinic and was swamped with patients. The people were so terrified by the violence. They've lost so much. We can only imagine what the situation is like in other villages further away."
