News for the Week of August 4, 1997August 4, 1997Poland Floods Mission CompletedThe MSF team returned from the flooded Wroclaw area of Poland last Saturday night, having distributed disposable materials to four hospitals most severely affected by the floods. The hospitals were lacking water and electricity, and boilers, air conditioning, and sterilization equipment had been destroyed or damaged. When they left, the team reported that private companies, fire departments, and the local Red Cross had brought the drinking water system under control. Last week, an MSF assessment team visited the town of Slobice, opposite the German town of Frankfurt, on the flooded Oder River, to assess emergency preparedness. Cambodian Refugees Flow Into ThailandLast Friday, fighting erupted in the province of Benteay Meanchey, Cambodia, close to the Thai border, in the area of Nong Chan and O'Beichon, where MSF operates a clinic for internally displaced persons. An estimated 4,000 people crossed the border into Thailand. MSF teams in both Banteay Meanchey and Thailand are monitoring the situation. The refugees are expected to return to Cambodia. Sierra Leone: Food Situation is WorryingThe MSF team in Freetown, Sierra Leone, reports that therapeutic feeding centers have seen an increase in admissions in recent weeks. Since the military coup of May 25, a sea and air blockade has limited food supplies.
