News for the Week of August 18,1997August 18, 1997MSF Teams Care for Injured in Sri LankaOn Thursday, August 14, two bombs were dropped from airplanes about 5 km southeast of Mallavi, Sri Lanka, where MSF has rehabilitated a hospital and provides gynecological, pediatric, and nursing care. It was the second such attack last week. Sixteen injured civilians are being treated in the hospital; the number of dead is unknown. The team has no plans to evacuate. Poland Flood Aid ContinuesMSF has been asked by the government to Poland to set up a mental health training program in Wroclaw to help those traumatized by the severe floods that occurred this summer. The first phase of the project will involve training school teachers to help children affected by the floods. In the immediate aftermath of the floods, MSF supplied hospitals with urgently needed materials. Congo-BrazzavilleMSF teams continue to seek access to the south of Brazzaville, which was sealed off to relief organizations last week due to heavy shelling and shooting in the town last week. Now that the fighting has died down, refugees--including some wounded--continue to cross the river to the Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. MSF teams are working to improve the water system in the Kinkole camp, east of Kinshasa. CambodiaThe 4,000 refugees from Nong Chan who crossed the Thai/Cambodian border to escape fighting voluntarily returned to Cambodia last week. The MSF team accompanied them on their walk back to their villages.
