News for the Week of August 31, 1998August 31, 1998Operations in China ExpandedAs a result of the continued heavy flooding in China, MSF is expanding its activities in China. In addition to programs in Hunan, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, MSF is now working in Hubei and Anhui provinces. The organization is collaborating closely with local Public Health and Red Cross bureaus to provide flood victims with temporary shelter and blankets, basic drugs and medical supplies, and clean drinking water. MSF is also helping to improve general hygiene conditions in areas with large concentrations of displaced persons. Mobile Aid Provided to Flood Victims in BangladeshIn response to the worst flooding to face Bangladesh in ten years, MSF has five mobile teams using boats to patrol affected areas in the centrally located Sirajganj district in the Jamuna River. The teams are offering basic medical care and health information to the displaced populations who are currently living directly on the water. MSF teams have also raised wells in the area to prevent additional overflow and are making preparations for a Diarrhea Treatment Center. With 760,000 hectares of agricultural land currently under water, MSF is also preparing for the possibility of food shortages. Fight Against Cholera in Chad Stepped UpMSF has helped to bring a devastating cholera epidemic under control in the majority of areas where our teams are operating in Chad. MSF is now setting up additional programs in other parts of the country, including the city of N'd'jamena, in order to combat recurring outbreaks of cholera.
