News for the Week of March 1, 1999March 1, 1999Meningitis Outbreak in SudanMSF is sending 35 medical volunteers to northern Sudan over the next few weeks to help combat a growing meningitis epidemic. An MSF cargo shipment containing enough medicine and supplies to treat 9,000 patients arrived in Khartoum today, March 1. The situation is still deteriorating. By Tuesday, February 23, a total of 1,156 cases had been reported, and the number of deaths had risen to 175. Six mobile teams from MSF will support health authorities in Sennar, El Geneina (West Dafur), Wau, North Dafur, South Dafur, and another location yet to be determined. The teams will provide medical treatment for the sick, carry out vaccinations, and monitor the vaccination cold chain. A special two-day training course for volunteers going to northern Sudan was held last week in Amsterdam. This practical refresher course covered subjects such as mass vaccination, the cold chain, and treatment of meningitis. Situation Remains Tense in KosovoMSF mobile medical teams continue to treat people displaced or wounded due to clashes between Serbians and ethnic Albanians in Kosovo. Last week, a team based in Pristina went to the area near Vucitern where fighting had taken place the day before. Five wounded people were treated. Fighting near Vucitern and Mutrovica last week also caused people to flee several villages in this region. MSF has sent two truck-loads of relief supplies to Likovc, one of the villages where many of the displaced are gathering.
