Angola Nutritional Emergency Fact Sheet Update

Therapeutic feeding centers provide specialized care for the most severely malnourished, particularly children. Supplementary Feeding Centers provide specially formulated rations to vulnerable members of a population to supplement their daily food intake. In January 2002, there were 11 TFCs in Angola; now there are 23, and 16 SFCs have opened since May.

BIE PROVINCE

  • In all, 9 MSF feeding centers are in operation in Bie Province, where 5176 beneficiaries are currently being cared for. In

    Kuito

    , there are 4 TFCs caring for 526 persons, and 2 SFCs with 2100 beneficiaries. In

    Kamacupa

    , the TFC has 150 beneficiaries and 2 SFCs provide care to 2400 people.
     

HUAMBO PROVINCE

  • In the two

    Caala

    TFCs, 450 persons are receiving care; in the past week there were 150 new admissions. In the

    Bailundo

    TFC, 650 persons are receiving care. New TFCs have opened in

    Chilembo

    and

    Sambo

    , with 160 and 227 beneficiaries respectively.

HUILA PROVINCE

  • In

    Matala

    , the TFC currently has 180 beneficiaries, and three SFCs provide care for 590 persons; the TFC in

    Chipindo

    has 244, and the SFC has 718. Meanwhile, a tent hospital in

    Bunjei

    admits 50 persons each week, and the SFC cares for 1528 people. Another TFC was opened in

    Dongo

    .

MALANJE PROVINCE

  • Two TFCs in

    Malanje

    are now treating 75 persons.

CUANDO CUBANGO PROVINCE

  • The

    Menongue

    TFC currently has 50 beneficiaries. The TFC in

    Mavinga

    has 200 beneficiaries, and an SFC in

    Soba Matias

    has 346 beneficiaries. In addition, 6 health posts are operating in the area.

UIGE PROVINCE

  • In the

    Uige

    TFC, the situation seems to be stable with 62 persons under care and 3 SFCs with 438 people. The TFC in

    Uamba

    cares for 250 people.

MOXICO PROVINCE

  • In the two

    Luena

    TFCs, 113 persons are receiving care, and there are 828 beneficiaries in the two SFCs.

LUNDA SUL PROVINCE

  • In the

    Saurimo

    TFC, 43 persons are receiving care.

ZAIRE PROVINCE

  • In the

    M'Banza Congo

    TFC there are now 20 people creciving care, and in the

    Madimba

    SFC there are 177 beneficiaries.

MSF has 172 international staff members present in Angola, in addition to some 2200 locally-hired staff members.
