Angola Nutritional Emergency Fact Sheet Update

Therapeutic feeding centers provide specialized care for the most severely malnourished, particularly children. Supplementary Feeding Centers provide specially formulated rations to vulnerable members of a population to supplement their daily food intake. In January 2002, there were 11 TFCs in Angola; now there are 23, and 16 SFCs have opened since May.

BIE PROVINCE

  • In all, 7 MSF feeding centers are in operation in Bie Province, where 3358 beneficiaries are currently being cared for. In

    Kuito

    , there are 2 TFCs caring for 265 persons, and 2 SFCs with 1726 beneficiaries. In

    Kamacupa

    , the TFC has 80 beneficiaries and 2 SFCs provide care to 1287 people. In

    Cuemba

    , an isolated town of about 11,000, MSF is opening a TFC and an SFC, and will support the local health center.
     

HUAMBO PROVINCE

  • In

    Caala

    one TFC remains with 230 children. In the

    Bailundo

    TFC, 600 persons are receiving care. Mobile teams travel weekly to the SFCs

    Chilembo

    and

    Sambo

    , treating 158 and 223 beneficiaries respectively. In addition Blanket Feeding Programs are supplying rations to about 10,000 people in

    Mungo

    ,

    Chitala

    ,

    Finge

    ,

    Luvemba

    and

    Cululo

    .

HUILA PROVINCE

  • In

    Matala

    , the TFC currently has 93 beneficiaries, and the remaining SFC provides care for 756 persons. MSF supports 2 health posts in IDP camps. The TFC in

    Chipindo

    has 163 people, and the SFC has 954. MSF supports the 20 bed In-Patient-Department of the clinic. Meanwhile, a tent hospital in

    Bunjei

    sees about 540 patients a week, admitting about 50, and the SFC cares for 1528 people. A blanket feeding program provides rations for 8913 children and vulnerables.

MALANJE PROVINCE

  • The TFCs in

    Malanje

    hospital intensive care ward is now treating 14 persons, and the SFC in

    Cangandala

    has 40 beneficiaries. The SFC in the

    Damba

    quartering area serves 89 children and that of

    Ngangassole

    , 93 children.

CUANDO CUBANGO PROVINCE

  • The TFC in

    Mavinga

    has nearly 300 beneficiaries. SFCs in

    Mavinga

    and the

    Matungo

    and

    Capembe

    Quartering Areas serve a total of over 2000 beneficiaries. Blanket feeding programs are planned in the two Quartering Areas for 7,200 beneficiaries. In addition MSF is present in

    Mavinga

    Hospital seeing 90 patients a day, and has just opened an isolation ward with a capacity of 100.

CUANZA SUL PROVINCE

  • Three hundred rations were delivered to the

LUNDA SUL PROVINCE

  • In the

    Saurimo

    TFC, 23 persons are receiving care.

UIGE PROVINCE

  • In the

    Uige

    TFC, the situation seems to be stable with 52 persons under care and 1 SFC with 296 people. The TFC in the

    Uamba

    Quartering Area near

    Sanza Pombo

    cares for 250 beneficiaries, and the SFC treats 638.

MOXICO PROVINCE

  • In the two

    Luena

    TFCs, 81 persons are receiving care, and there are 550 beneficiaries in the two SFCs. Operations in

    Cuemba

    have resumed: support to the hospital and a TFC and SFC will open soon.

ZAIRE PROVINCE

  • In the

    M'Banza Congo

    TFC there are now 23 people receiving care.

In addition to the TFCs, SFCs and Blanket Feeding programs described above, MSF is continually conducting exploratory missions outside the towns where they are based looking for isolated populations that are unable to reach health services. During these explos, the teams screen communities for malnutrition, measles, malaria and other epidemics, and determine the need for vaccination coverage and longer term interventions.

MSF has 174 international staff members present in Angola, in addition to some 2260 locally-hired staff members.
