Angola Nutritional Emergency Fact Sheet Update

Therapeutic feeding centers provide specialized care for the most severely malnourished, particularly children. In January 2002, there were 11 TFCs in Angola; now there are 23.

BIE PROVINCE

• In all, 8 MSF TFCs are in operation in Bie Province, where 1426 beneficiaries are currently being cared for. In the 4

  Kuito

  TFCs are 795 persons are receiving care, while at the two TFCs in

  Kamacupa

  350 persons are receiving care.
   

HUAMBO PROVINCE

• In the three

  Caala

  TFCs, 900 persons are receiving care; in the past week there were 150 new admissions. In the

  Bailundo

  TFC, 93 persons are receiving care.

HUILA PROVINCE

• The

  Matala

  TFC currently has 160 beneficiaries; the TFC in

  Chipindo

  has 400. Meanwhile, a tent hospital in

  Bunjei

  admits 50 persons each week.

MALANJE PROVINCE

• In the four

  Malanje

  TFCs, 404 persons total are receiving care. In

  Cangandala

  TFC, 45 persons are receiving care.

CUANDO CUBANGO PROVINCE

• The

  Menongue

  TFC currently has 235 beneficiaries. Six health posts are operating in the area.

HUIGE PROVINCE

• In the

  Huige

  TFC, the situation seems to be stable.

MOXICO PROVINCE

• In the two

  Luena

  TFCs, 281 persons are receiving care.

LUNDA SUL PROVINCE

• In the

  Saurimo

  TFC, 62 persons are receiving care.

Note: MSF is also working in the provinces of Zaire. MSF has close to 160 international staff members present in Angola, in addition to some 2000 locally-hired staff members.
