MY LIFE WITH HIV

Papa Jean: Everything started with the death of my wife in 1997. She's here in this photo with our children. When my wife died, people suspected that I had the HIV virus because I'd been leading a wild life, chasing girls. I worked as a salesman for a textile firm in Kinshasa and I was often away on business.

My friend François came to see me. His wife had died of Aids and he'd tested positive. He advised me to get tested. I refused at first, then I fell ill when I was away on business. I had to be brought home by plane. Once I'd tested positive, I said to myself "It can't be true! There's no way I can recover. I'm going to die. What a terrible way to go."
