"The Compromise"
SUDAN | INDONESIA | CAMBODIA | AFGHANISTAN

Sudan:

In southern Sudan, several decades of virtually continuous civil war have led to a vicious circle of displacement, lack of health care, and spiraling disease. For all of eight days, Megan Cox, an Australian doctor, has been working amongst the Dinka, an ethnic group especially hard-hit by perpetual violence in the south. Megan’s emergency room experience prepared her well for work in a conflict zone, but when a child is bitten by a poisonous snake and his leg swells dangerously, she defers to local wisdom, with surprising results.

Indonesia:

In West Papua, Indonesia, Nurse Solfrid Gundersen is representing of the only humanitarian organization in the region. Her job is to prepare isolated people in West Papua’s mountain villages for a potential medical emergency. Traveling by foot deep into the region’s mountains, Solfrid trains local health workers and sets up an emergency radio reporting system in the remote village of Landikma.

Cambodia:

In Sotnikum, Cambodia, MSF Engineer Justin Hummel is building Cambodia’s largest well – a potentially life-saving improvement in an area where clean water is scarce and waterborne diseases rife. Working alongside his Cambodian cohorts, Justin discovers that the communication problems involved in the project may prove more daunting than the engineering, and bridging the culture gap will be vital to his success.

Afghanistan:

On Afghanistan’s border with Iran, Afghan refugees are flooding back into the country, but for one woman, returning to her home in Kabul may prove fatal. Refa Fazelahmad has a heart problem requiring advanced surgery. In Iran it’s available, but unaffordable for Refa – in Afghanistan there are no facilities to even perform the procedure. For Dr. Chris Tiley, the challenge is formidable: convince a sick woman to stay in a country that is not her own and where she may not get treatment, or allow her to return at considerable risk to her own life.
