Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971.  Today, MSF provides aid in more than 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters. MSF provides independent, impartial assistance to those most in need. MSF reserves the right to speak out to bring attention to neglected crises, to challenge inadequacies or abuse of the aid system, and to advocate for improved medical treatments and protocols.

As a member of the international network of MSF, the US office, also known as MSF-USA, contributes significant financial resources to MSF field operations. 

MSF-USA is currently seeking a Director of Finance to support MSF in carrying out its mission in an effective, efficient, ethical and accountable manner to its donors and the public at large by planning, organizing, and directing all strategies, activities and staff members engaged in MSF-USA's budgetary, financial and accounting practices.

Reporting to the Director of Internal Operations, the Director of Finance is a member of MSF-USA’s extended management team, participating in developing collective decisions, setting priorities and making recommendations to the Board of Directors.

Position responsibilities:

Financial Management and Accounting

  • Oversees and directs cash management, implementation of the MSF USA’s Investment Policy, budgeting, audit, tax, accounting, purchasing, long range forecasting, as it relates to MSF-USA.
  • Appraises MSF-USA's financial position and issues periodic reports on its financial stability, liquidity, and growth to the Board, management, staff and to the International Office.
  • Additionally, represents MSF USA in and works within the organization’s international finance platforms (OCP and Movement) to create the international combined financial statements and budgets, develop best practices, negotiate and implement the financial terms of inter-movement international agreements.
  • Directs a headquarters’ budget of $60 MM, a grants budget of $300 MM
  • Analyzes, consolidates, and directs all cost accounting procedures together with other statistical and routine reports. Identifies analytical reporting needs and defines the corresponding analytical procedures.
  • Analyzes financial records to forecast future financial position, budget requirements and cash flow statements.
  • Works closely with  the  Treasurer of the Board of Directors in implementing the Investment Policy and jointly reviews activities such as custodian of funds, securities, and net assets of approximately $230MM.Advises management and the Board on investments for short- and long-range financial plans in line with MSF-USA investment policy.
  • Assures establishment of and compliance with internal procedures related to: banking, segregation of duties, internal controls and security of financial data.
  • Directs and prepares staff in support of external audit and conversion of MSF-USA financial data into international consolidated financial statements.
  • Assures compliance with Federal, State and Local government regulations with regard to: fund-raising activities, Charitable Gift Annuities, advocacy and lobbying activities, document retention, investment activities, unrelated business income activities, and international grant-making practices.
  • Directs the Grant Officer on the definition and administration of the grant-making process from a budgetary, financial and accountability perspective.
  • Directs the disbursal of program funding based on Board approved grants and MSF-USA’s financial position. Monitors and advises on the allocation of donor-restricted funds. 


  • Leads, manages and evaluates the 8-person Finance department in establishment of annual objectives
  • Actively participates in group and international coordination and strategic financial planning with colleagues from other MSF sections
  • Delegates authority, consults with and guides staff to achieve goals.  Provides ongoing feedback in a context of mutual respect
  • Design and implement the structural and organizational changes necessary for the finance department to adapt to present and ongoing challenges, ensuring a satisfactory balance between the distribution of skills and tasks and the necessary redundancies among the team.


  • Master's degree (M.B.A. or M.P.A.) or equivalent plus a minimum of 10 years progressive experience in non-profit Finance & Administration, including at least four years at a senior level, preferably in an international organization and not for profit organization, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Solutions-oriented individual who can understand the needs of the entire institution as s/he carries out his/her responsibilities. Must demonstrate superior interpersonal, leadership and diplomatic skills and great ability to support the teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills demonstrated in previous roles that required communication with a broad and diverse set of partners and impeccable judgment.  Experience collaborating in a highly matrixed management structure strongly preferred.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to common inquires from the Board of Directors, auditors, regulatory agencies, members of MSF and the NGO community, top management, staff, and the general public.
  • Demonstrated success in roles requiring analytic, systematic thinking while managing multiple priorities.  Ability to anticipate and resolve problems in a timely manner by gathering and analyzing information skillfully.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build work relationship with peers
  • Experience designing and implementing financial and operational systems and processes to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of a growing organization.
  • Experience in accompanying an ERP deployment process.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of US non-profit regulatory environment and grants management, and risk management.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and leading the development and follow up of large budgets, and partnering with Development on forecasting and reconciliation of donations.
  • Staff management experience with ability to provide leadership, innovation, motivation and constructive performance reviews to staff, securing their respective commitments to the organization’s goals.
  • Highly computer literate including proficiency with spreadsheet and database software.   Extensive working knowledge of business accounting software highly preferred.
  • Genuine interest in and commitment to the humanitarian principles of MSF, and its commitment to transparency to its donors and employees.
  • Ability to travel (approx. 5%) several times a year to Europe for network meetings.
  • Residence in or relocation to the New York City area. 

Starting salary in the low $110s to mid $120s to start, commensurate with experience; excellent benefits.

Mid-Level Giving Manager

      I.    Purpose of the Job

The Mid-Level Giving Manager works closely with the Marketing and Major Gifts teams to develop and implement a program strategy and comprehensive cultivation and stewardship program for Doctors Without Borders’ mid-level “Partners”—donors who give any single gift of $500 - $5,000 in a 24-month period. S/he engages donors directly through personalized communications and outreach that deepens their relationship with the organization. The Mid-Level Giving Manager is responsible for developing the strategy for this highly valuable program, overseeing the development of engagement opportunities, marketing materials, and upgrading strategies specifically targeted to Doctors Without Borders’ Partners. 


      I.    Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Mid-Level Marketing Strategy and Management (70%)

  • Develops−and oversees the implementation of−innovative, multi-channel strategies for mid-level acquisition, retention and upgrade
  • Conducts continuous evaluation of MSF’s branded mid-level giving program, recommending changes to program design and implementation on an ongoing basis
  • Collaborates on creative design, messaging and data segmentation for mid-level prospect mailings
  • Builds relationships with mid-level donors via phone calls, personalized email communications, ongoing written contact, and events.
  • Acts as primary contact for incoming phone calls and email requests from mid-level donors, soliciting feedback and tracking response in the database.
  • Develops mass-market outreach plans that demonstrate appreciation, recognition and engagement of mid-level donors
  • Stays abreast of industry best-practices in mid-level donor management and implements applicable innovations to the program
  • Works closely with Planned Giving and Major Gifts to assist in the cultivation of potential major donors and planned giving prospects


Planning & Budgeting (30%)

  • Collaborates with Marketing Director, marketing vendors and members of team on the creation and implementation of an Annual Plan and Budget for mid-level program designed to meet the fundraising needs of MSF-USA
  • Sets, tracks, and prepares reporting on program KPIs and goals


    II.    Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises and manages one or more office volunteers, interns and/or Work Study students who work on specific clerical, administrative or research projects in support of the department.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training staff; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.


   III.    Fiscal Responsibility

Works with Director and agency to forecast mid-level program revenue and expenses. Oversees analysis of mid-level revenue trends throughout the year to assess results, and interprets data to recommend and implement appropriate changes to targets or adjustments in strategies.

Works with Director and consultants to develop mid-level program budget for review by the Director of Development and subsequent approval by Executive Director and Administrative Committee of the Board of Directors.  Reviews and administers approved budget, in accordance with MSF’s policies and procedures.  Works with Director to revise program budget when needed.

Collaborates closely with Director and consultants to prepare and administer mid-level program budget.


  IV.    Extent of Public Contact

This position has extensive public contact as the face of the MSF-USA Partner program. Daily contact with donors comprises a large part of this position.

Attends regularly scheduled staff meetings and Program Updates and several annual office-wide debates to participate in information sharing across all departments, and stay informed on important MSF topics so that s/he can speak accurately to high-value donors about MSF’s current work, and contribute to the organization’s ongoing development.

Attends regularly scheduled departmental meetings and marketing unit meetings and cross-departmental Development/Communications meetings to share information, brainstorm solutions, and coordinate priorities and activities. 


    V.    Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit for long periods and to concentrate on work, including typing, and turn out heavy volumes of work accurately. Must be able to proofread own work accurately so that only minor corrections are needed on an infrequent basis.

  VI.    Working Conditions, Travel and Environment

The duties of the job require regular attendance 5 days/week for a minimum of 35 hours.  Must be available to work before 9:00 am, after 5:00 pm or on weekends, as required. 

The Mid-Level Giving Manager must be available to travel to seminars, conferences and MSF international working groups.


 VII.    Qualifications

  • Minimum 3-5 years directly relevant experience in soup-to-nuts responsibility for a fundraising program, plus BA, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Exceptionably personable, with proven skills at building and maintaining supporter relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to develop successful strategies for donor recruitment and retention
  • Demonstrated ability to produce program and project documentation, such as strategy documents, creative briefs, project plans, wrap-up reports, KPI reports
  • Familiarity with complex data segmentation for large fundraising programs
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and drive the implementation of cross-channel marketing plans
  • Excellent computer skills including proficiency using MS Office and extensive knowledge of Excel
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Organized, detail-oriented, creative with problem-solving skills and strong analytical skills, who is comfortable working in a high energy, fast paced environment
  • Ability to deal calmly with pressure and deadlines and to communicate with diplomacy in all scenarios
  • Collaborative team player able to work effectively in cross-functional teams
  • Ability to work independently, move projects from conceptual stages to launch, and handle multiple and often competing deadlines
  • Familiarity with ROI or other donor database a plus
  • Strong understanding of the mission and messaging of Doctors Without Borders

The New York office of MSF is seeking a part-time Administrative Assistant for the Executive Department to provide support to Executive staff and the Board of Directors.

Who you are: For this position is it important that you are:

  • Available to work flexible hours between 8am-6pm from Monday to Friday

Position responsibilities:

  • Arranges travel and accommodation for Executive Department staff and Board of Directors adhering to MSF travel guidelines (including domestic and international flights, hotel, ground transportation, and visa applications).
  • Provides support on finance related tasks for the Executive Department. Assists in processing credit card reports and other administrative tasks relating to financial tracking.
  • Provides other administrative support as needed under the supervision of the Board and Executive Liaison Officer and in coordination with the Executive Intern, such as booking phone lines, conference rooms, etc. for meetings and conference calls.  Coordinate logistics for in-person Board meetings.
  • Organize and maintain institutional documents pertaining to the Board on the MSF movement-wide intranet.
