While teams from the aid organizations Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and SOS Méditerranée attempted to rescue people from boats in distress in the Mediterranean Sea on May 23, the Libyan coast guard approached the boats, intimidated the passengers and then fired gunshots into the air, threatening people's lives and creating mayhem, MSF said today.

ROME/NEW YORK, OCTOBER 26, 2016—Twenty-five people onboard an overcrowded inflatable boat were found dead yesterday during a search and rescue operation by a Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) ship in the central Mediterranean, which saved 246 people from the boat and another nearby raft.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) search and rescue teams on board the ships Bourbon Argos, Dignity I, and Aquarius (which is run in partnership with the humanitarian organization SOS MEDITERRANEE) rescued nearly 2,000 men, women, and children from 11 separate boats in less than seven hours on the Mediterranean Sea. Many of the rescues were conducted under dramatic circumstances, with some patients requiring evacuation to the Italian mainland.
