Bangladesh: MSF assists Cyclone Sidr victims

For 40 days between November 2007 and January 2008, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provided emergency assistance for people affected by Cyclone Sidr in southern Bangladesh. MSF focused on the hardest-hit region on the coast, providing basic health care through mobile clinics in Pirojpur district, in Mathbaria area, and distributing essential relief items in Patuakhali district, Galachipa area, as well as improving access to water throughout the region.

In Pirojpur district, the main pathologies were diarrhea, which was mainly due to the difficulty in accessing clean drinking water, respiratory infections, and skin diseases. In Patuakhali district, 4,000 kits with blankets, soap, buckets, clothes, and kitchen sets, were distributed. In both districts, MSF repaired or rebuilt sanitation facilities. When the health situation was judged to be stable and the most isolated populations were able to receive aid from government and other organizations, MSF ended its emergency operation.
