From May 21 through July 9, 2003, MSF provided medical and psychological care to people affected by a major earthquake in northern Algeria. The earthquake took the lives of 2,700 people (with another 1,000 unaccounted for), injured 7,000 and left tens of thousands homeless. In the city of Zemmouri, 100km to the east of Algiers, MSF doctors and psychologists provided medical care for the injured as well as individual and group therapy for adults and children. Many people were treated for post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition, MSF provided counseling and debriefing to many of the Algerian health personnel and rescuer workers who had responded to the disaster. MSF currently has no ongoing projects in Algeria.
