MSF has worked in Bolivia since 1987

Bolivia has the highest levels of Chagas disease in Latin America. This parasitic infection is one of the most neglected diseases in the Americas; in Bolivia, it is the fourth leading cause of death (read more about Chagas disease here). In October 2002, MSF opened a Chagas project in Tarija, O'Connor province. The goal is to diminish prevalence among the 8,300 children under 14 living in the area while organizing education, diagnosis and treatment activities. In El Alto, La Paz, MSF continues a health program focused on reducing morbidity of mothers in this poor urban area, improving mother-and-child programs and providing assistance to women from violent homes. A similar project in Chimoré ended in October 2002.
