MSF has been working in Brazil since 1991

Since 1993, MSF has been bringing basic health care and psychosocial support to socially excluded people in Rio de Janeiro. One project targets people living on the streets and provides health care, psychological support and social orientation aimed at their integration into the public system. Another project, opened in May 2003, benefits more than 10,000 people living in Marcilio Dias, a slum in northern Rio de Janeiro with high unemployment and where the dangers of drug and arms traffickers exacerbate the precarious living conditions. Half of the residents of this area are younger than 19 and most have no access to clean water or sanitation. A health center there offers medical and psychological consultations, vaccinations and health education and social services for women, children and teenagers.
