International staff: 17 MSF primarily works to combat AIDS and malaria in Cambodia. Since 1998 MSF has provided voluntary counseling and testing, treatment of opportunistic infections and psychological support to people infected with HIV (since 1995 MSF has been working on HIV/AIDS education and prevention). Beginning in 2001, antiretroviral (ARV) therapy has been included in projects in Phnom Penh (July 2001), Siem Reap (October 2002), Sotnikum (July 2003) and Takeo (August 2003). Today over 950 patients receive ARVs through MSF. Many thousands more come in for consultations and receive treatment for opportunistic infections as well as other care and support. At chronic disease clinics in Siem Reap and Takeo, people with diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and AIDS receive regular care and follow-up. In the fight against malaria, in September 2002 MSF began a trial of Artekin, an artemisinin-containing combination therapy (ACT) in Kvav and Anlong Veng. MSF also responds to natural disasters in Cambodia, such as the floods that devastated Prey Veng province in September 2002.
