International staff: 9 MSF began working in Cameroon in 2000 Antiretroviral (ARV) treatment and care for people with HIV/AIDS remains the main component of MSF's work in Cameroon. Over 310 people now receive free ARV treatment through the AIDS programs supported by MSF in the capital Yaoundé and the city of Douala in the west. MSF is also running testing, voluntary counseling and prevention activities in the outpatient departments of two health facilities in Douala (one hospital in the district of Nylon and one health center in the district of New Bell), carrying out an average of 600 consultations per month. Since its launch in October 2002, a new Buruli Ulcer treatment project in Ayos and Akonolinga has provided surgical interventions for 134 people suffering from this bacterial infection, which destroys skin and bone tissue. |
