International staff: 17 MSF has been working in China since 1988 The opening of an AIDS clinic in Xiangfan city of Hubei province in May 2003 marks a turning point for MSF activities in China. Officially recognized as a pilot project, the program has the potential to be replicated countrywide if it is successful. In addition to treating opportunistic infections related to AIDS, MSF has begun antiretroviral treatment for a handful of patients, hoping to include 500 people in the coming years. After the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in Hong Kong in March 2003, MSF provided protection and training in Hong Kong and in two hospitals in Zhangjiakou city in Hebei province on the Mainland. MSF continues to provide medical and psychological care, housing and food to marginalized children and minors of Baoji city in Shaanxi province. In Kashgar Prefecture in Xinjiang province, MSF focuses on hygiene promotion and water sanitation. |
