MSF operations in Italy focus on illegal immigrants and asylum-seekers, primarily from Africa and the Middle East, who use Italy as an entry point to Europe. In September 2002, MSF began work at a reception center for undocumented migrants on Lampedusa Island, providing medical triage for 9,000 people in the first year. Medical care is also offered to illegal immigrants in Siracusa province, in southwestern Sicily, through an agreement with the local public health service. In Rome, MSF works to improve access to basic care for vulnerable foreigners and continues to lobby the government on issues related to asylum-seekers and illegal migrants.
