International staff: 5 MSF first worked in Madagascar in 1987 Young people in difficulty, including those living on the street, are at the heart of MSF work in Madagascar. Three socio-medical centers in the capital Antananarivo provided comprehensive medical care and social and legal support to more than 3,500 street children in 2002. This project was expanded over the last year to include mothers and pregnant women. MSF has also helped improve health and sanitary conditions in three juvenile correction centers and in the juvenile sector of Antanimur prison in Antananarivo. MSF continues to run a therapeutic nutrition unit in the Befelatana hospital in Tana and to respond to medical and nutritional emergencies caused by Madagascar's exposed climatic position, such as the Kesiny cyclone in early 2002. |
