International staff: 9 MSF has been active in Mali since 1983 MSF carries out a variety of activities in Mali, focusing on eye diseases and support of the public health infrastructure. Activities include mass distribution of the generic drug Azithromycin to treat trachoma and mobile surgical clinics to operate for trachoma, cataract and trichiasis. These projects will be replicated at the national level by the Ministry of Health. In the Selingue health district, successful work to improve staff motivation and quality of care through sharing the financing of health care among the government, NGOs and the people has prompted the government to pursue this strategy on a larger scale. MSF continues work with a nursing school in Gao; support for Ansongo health district drew to a close at the end of 2002. Since October 2002, MSF has also provided assistance to people fleeing war in Côte d'Ivoire for refuge in Mali. |
