International staff: 40 MSF first worked in Mozambique in 1984 AIDS-related medical care is MSF's principal concern in Mozambique, where an estimated 13% of all adults are HIV-positive. Comprehensive care offered in Maputo, Lichinga and Tete includes voluntary counseling and testing, treatment of opportunistic infections, home-based care and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Antiretroviral treatment for AIDS patients began in 2003; as of July, around 250 people were receiving these life-prolonging drugs in Maputo and Tete. MSF also continues to promote cholera prevention in Maputo and monitors epidemics around the country in coordination with the Ministry of Health.
