International staff: 6 MSF began working in Tajikistan in 1991 After 13 years of aid work in Tajikistan, MSF is winding down all programs as needs become more oriented toward long-term development. In several regions of Rasht Valley, MSF supported basic health care facilities and reproductive health programs. This included distribution of essential drugs, conducting trainings for rural health practitioners, monitoring outbreaks of infectious diseases and carrying out vaccination campaigns. The program of emergency preparedness and response to outbreaks of infectious disease was handed over in full to another NGO in June 2003. MSF's reproductive health care programs will be handed over to an NGO in October 2003. MSF also ran a support program to inpatients of psychiatric institutions, providing food and non-food items and essential drugs; promoting awareness and interest in the issues surrounding psychiatric care among the government and international actors was a key part of this project. MSF will end its mission in Tajikistan by the end of 2003. |
