International staff: 2 MSF has been in Turkmenistan since 1999 The tuberculosis treatment project carried out by MSF since 1999 targeting Dashoguz province now completely covers this region of 1,040,000 people. At the end of 2002, the program had a success rate (cured and completed) of 85% among new smear-positive TB cases and 80% among TB patients overall. By the end of 2003, MSF plans to hand over all activities of this DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Short Course) program to the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry. The MSF office in Ashgabat remains a vital logistic support to all MSF missions in Central Asia, particularly western and northern Afghanistan.
