MSF has been in Uzbekistan since 1997

Using the DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Short Course) program, MSF works to combat TB in several regions of Uzbekistan. MSF is currently in the process of handing over the supervision of treatment to the Ministry of Health. As a part of its TB treatment program, in 2002 MSF launched a pilot project in Nukus city and Chimbay district to treat multi-drug resistant TB.

MSF is also conducting research on the Aral Sea area; the goal is to foster a better understanding of the relationship between the degraded environment of the Aral Sea area and human health, and to advocate for policy change and interventions by government and international actors. Over the last year, MSF also addressed the needs of internally displaced people by distributing food to the most vulnerable families at the Istiqol Resettlement Center until May 2003.
