MSF first worked in Zimbabwe in the 1980s

MSF activities are centered around care and treatment for people with HIV/AIDS and response to malnutrition in Zimbabwe, where over 33% of adults (15-49 years old) are HIV-positive and millions of people need food aid. In Bulawayo, the second-largest city, MSF runs a program that works not only to prevent transmission of HIV from mothers to children, but also aims to provide ARV treatment to other family members – fathers, brothers and sisters – who are HIV-positive. In August 2002, MSF set up a therapeutic feeding center in Tsholostho (Matabeleland North). In February 2003, MSF set up therapeutic feeding centers for children with severe malnutrition in five mission hospitals in Masvingo province in the south. In Manicaland province in eastern Zimbabwe, MSF has been treating malnutrition at Murambinda hospital since October 2002.
