Attention to Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS

MSF has been active in Algeria since 1998 and remains ready to respond to emergencies related to Algeria's ongoing civil war. In April and May 2001, MSF closely monitored the situation as violence flared up in the region of Kabylie, long a flashpoint of the war.

After the phasing out of some of its projects in 2000, MSF has turned its attention to reproductive health and HIV/AIDS. Despite improvement in some health indicators (such as infant mortality) over the last decade, poverty-related illnesses, particularly tuberculosis, trachoma, and venereal disease, have increased in recent years. Reproductive health education and access to family planning are still limited.

The number of HIV cases in Algeria is expected to climb upward. MSF is working with the Ministry of Health on an HIV/AIDS awareness program targeting four college campuses. MSF supplies condoms, informative leaflets, and videos to local NGOs for their information campaigns. MSF will continue working with official and private agencies to address these sensitive health matters.
