After Ten Years, MSF Ends Work in Azerbaijan

After ten years of providing care for the people of Azerbaijan, MSF has completed its missions in the country. Past programs included reproductive health programs, the rehabilitation of public health structures, and medical aid for some of the estimated 570,000 people displaced as a result of the country's war with Armenia. More recently, an immunization program and a project on sexually transmitted diseases came to their scheduled ends in December 2000 and January 2001 respectively. The distribution of drugs to four small clinics in Sumgayit ended in February 2001, and MSF donated the remaining 500 kg of medicine to ensure the needs of long-term patients are met. Regional reproductive health programs in Imishli, Fizuli, and Saatli were concluded in early 2001, and MSF left the country at the end of March. Before leaving Azerbaijan, MSF worked to transfer its programs to organizations more oriented toward long-term development.
MSF had been active in Azerbaijan since 1990.
