MoroccoMany migrants find themselves unexpectedly based in Morocco when they cannot cross into bordering countries. They end up in major urban centers like Rabat and Casablanca where they are without proper access to basic healthcare services. Based in Rabat, Casablanca, and Oujda, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) runs curative and preventive activities. MSF teams facilitate access to the health facilities and guarantee the quality of the health care. In 2008, MSF undertook over 4,000 consultations. In addition, MSF is lobbying the authorities and other agencies to ensure they take responsibility for the migrants’ health. In 2008, a report on violence and migration was given to authorities in both Spain and Morocco outlining the challenges faced. Because the migrants are trapped in Morocco with no means of generating income, illegal practices have started to emerge such as prostitution and forced labor associated with human trafficking networks. As a consequence, new health problems linked to sexual and reproductive health are becoming prevalent. MSF has worked in Morocco since 1997. |
