While her practice in the United States prepared her for dealing with the death of a patient, anesthesiologist Julia Sobol wasn't prepared for how young and healthy her patients would be in her first MSF assignment.

Julia Sobol is an anesthesiologist from New York City. For two months she worked in a maternal health care program in Jahun, Nigeria, where MSF responds to obstetric emergencies and offers surgery for women with vesicovaginal fistulas. While her practice in the United States prepared her for dealing with the death of a patient, she wasn't prepared for how young and healthy her patients would be in her first MSF assignment. Here Julia remembers one of her patients—a 15-year-old girl who died after delivering a stillborn.
